Find and secure a place to rent first! Try and find something close enough to the subway so you don't get the life sucked out of you trying to get around! Beware of the 5th floor walk-up - it stinks forgetting something once you are down! Be prepared to tip everyone :)! Don't be intimidated by cabbies, know the route you want to take and BE POLITE when asking, but be firm. There are plenty of great places with cheap eats to discover and Fresh Direct (an online grocery store that has everything you need and delivers to your door) can be a great service for stocking your pad. Be prepared to get annoyed. Inevitably, most New Yorkers are on their way to something and can be very engrossed. I always try and be polite, extend my good energy. I believe that when it comes down to it, most NY'ers will lend a hand when its needed. You don't have to be born here to be a New Yorker, you just have to stick to it...and stay!

Pace yourself! And whatever money you plan on saving and bringing with you, should probably double that!
