One World Trade Center will soon take the crown from the Empire State Building as it climbs to the top of the world. The Freedom Tower is quickly becoming New York's tallest building. It hit 1,208 feet above street level as the 93rd floor was built about a week ago. Within four to six weeks, it will surpass the Empire State Building when the 101st floor is built. It's rising an average of 9.5 feet a week, and is already taller than the Bank of America Tower and the Chrysler Building. When it's complete, the tower will stand at 1,776 feet, representing America's independence as well as the resolve and recovery after the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001. At that height, a dizzying 104 floors, the building will be the tallest in the United States. The view from the top already encompasses Bay Ridge, Kennedy Airport, part of the George Washington Bridge and the smaller buildings of downtown and midtown Manhattan. Construction workers said they could literally wave into the windows of passing airplanes. The three-level observation deck on the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors will be open to the public in early 2014.
